How You can Support Your Reactive Dog
A skill that we often don’t practice, or forget to practice, especially on a hectic day with long to-do lists - is patience. I know that I feel like I am always multitasking and often need to remind myself to be present. to be still and observant are skills that I practice with my animals regularly.
I find that animals are good at keeping me present, especially when they are misbehaving. Behaviour is a form of communicating and being present and observant are the best ways to understand what they are communicating to me.
Reactive dogs usually have reactive owners. When we are in a state of reactivity, we are on alert, checking for the next thing that needs our attention. When we are patient we trust that we don’t need to react to everything right away. Solutions and answers will come when we are observant and reflective.
Our animals act as emotional mirrors, reflecting to us our own emotions - so when we are stressed, anxious, and impatient - so are our animals.
To reduce misbehaving and reactivity in our dogs - we first need to learn not to be reactive ourselves, to be present, to be patient. We don’t need to take action right away all the time - slow down and process what is happening instead. Of course, we need to react if our animals are in a dangerous situation, but often we can have the ability to stop, pause, take deep breaths, and observe the situation before reacting and moving to correct or change the situation or our animal.
It is important to view difficult situations as an opportunity to learn about your dog. To grow and strengthen your relationship and partnership with your dog.
