Your Emotions affect your Dog and Cat
How our animals feel affects how they act and their ability to think.
Emotions are an important part of communication.
Both dogs and cats are social animals. They are in tune with us, they check in with our emotions and co-regulate with us. Doing so creates a shared sense of safety and connection so that they feel that they belong. A need to belong is essential for social animals.
Both dogs and cats can smell our emotions since our emotions and hormones are closely tied together.
They look to us for cues on how to act. They check in to see if there is a risk or something to be aware of. They can also determine that we don't know what we're doing or we are unable to handle the situation, this is when they decide to take control, usually by becoming aggressive or excessively vocalizing to us, often seen by dogs alert barking and cats scratching or hissing.
Dogs and cats learn how to interact with the environment from us, we are the ones that model appropriate behaviors and emotions. They look to us for guidance.
Since our animals co-regulate with us, this means that they can help us feel better, just as we help them. This is why it is important to stay calm and present (especially when our dogs have an emotional response).
To show our animals that we can handle situations, we need to communicate to them (with our energy and emotions) that we are confident, aware, present, and listening to their triggers. Just because we know something isn't a threat, doesn't mean our animals know. We can't ignore their triggers and concerns. Being present helps us notice when our animals feel unsafe. It is our job to communicate with them that we are safe and able to handle any situation.
We need to choose to create more experiences where we can stay in emotional harmony, feeling safe, calm, and happy.
We need to make sure that our body language, expression, and emotions all match. Our animals know when we aren't honest or are in denial. We can't feel one way and tell them something else. We can't hide our emotions from our animals. They pick up on our worries, fears, anxiety, and anger. But they also mirror our joy, excitement, peace, and love.
What are you communicating to your animal through your emotions? body language?
Do you have clear & consistent boundaries with your animals or do you change your mind depending on your mood? Doing so results in confusion. Your animals may not know how to act, resulting in challenging and frustrating behaviors.
