Keeping a Clean Home with Pets

Keeping a clean home with pets can be a challenge, especially when you have a multi-pet household.

Here are some tips that I've found helpful to keep in mind and incorporate into my routine to ensure that I have a clean home.

One of the most important things is to clean up as soon as possible. Don't think "I'll clean it later" or "it will only get dirty again soon". It is important to be consistent! Stick to a regular cleaning schedule. I set up mandatory daily tasks and weekly tasks. Then pick a day and time to do them (and stick with it!)

For example; for daily tasks, I clean and refill water bowls, food bowls, and litter boxes. I do this first thing in the morning before I have breakfast. Keeping a schedule is super important for the health of your animals and the cleanliness of your home.

  • Groom (brush and bathe) your pets regularly to reduce shedding and dander.

  • Wash pet bedding and toys regularly, this will help with odors and allergens.

  • Use pet-friendly furniture and materials that are easy to clean and resistant to pet stains.

  • Treat stains immediately and remove odor (especially urine).

  • Twice a week I will vacuum carpets, rugs, and furniture as well as mop floors. It can be helpful to use lint rollers and pet hair brushes to remove hair from furniture and cat trees.

  • Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to help remove pet dander and other allergens from the air. Place them in rooms where your pets spend the most time.

Remember to use products designed for use around animals and products that don't contain harsh chemicals or toxins. I love to use Vinager, Dr. Bronner's Organic Pure Castile Liquid Soap, and homemade cleaners.
